Hosting is basically leasing space on a server(s). And a server is where you put your actual web site. Along with all image files, documents and scripts included in your site. Think of it as a virtual apartment that is accessible for open-house visits for your potential clients. Of course you determine what they can and can't see.
It is important that the servers be dependable and have an almost non-existant downtime. Another main concern is having all the necessary tools and proper administration interface to configure, maintain and edit your site. Upgrading your alloted space and bandwidth (traffic) should also be easily manageable.
The great thing about a good host is that once you're setup, you can almost forget about it...
